Almost every company has a spreadsheet like this. It started innocently: someone made a table for production planning, commission settlements or order tracking. Years passed. "Plan_2026_v7_final_CORRECTED_fin.xlsx". If several versions of the same file are circulating around the company and nobody is sure which one is current, decisions are being made on data that may be a week out of date. The spreadsheet has its guardian: the person who knows all the formulas, the exceptions and the "you have to fix this bit by hand". When they're on holiday, the process slows down. Will we have to give up Excel entirely? No. Spreadsheets stay where they are best: in ad hoc analysis. The application takes over what the spreadsheet fails at, meaning many people working together, enforcing the rules and data security. Export to a spreadsheet is a standard feature.
Our spreadsheet has years of accretions and nobody knows all the formulas. Is that a problem? That's the typical starting point.
